SWAT Worker's Caucus
SWAT Workers Caucus will meet Mondays 12-1pm. For now, meetings will
be in the Multicultural Room.
Everyone attending should try and bring 2-3 co-workers. Students and
working students are encouraged to participate regularly or
occasionally: stop by, share news and your work issues, perspective,
distribute new flyers, etc.
Why? We need to mobilize and engage more workers, unionized and
non-unionized. Workers should not organize separately from the rest
of SWAT, but we recognize that SWAT meeting times are not optimal for
many workers, especially those with families.
The first meeting was two weeks ago. The caucus today, and in the next
few weeks will focus on building the caucus and mobilizing workers for
the 24th. SWAT's attraction and the attraction of the caucus to
workers is engagement with other sectors of the movement; ability to
cross union organize; and a democratic, one person-one vote
organization.
The workers caucus is for organizing but also a place we can exchange
info about what is happening in our workplace and unions. We will
work around demands of the 24th including no furloughs, no layoffs, no
fee hikes and mobilize to make sure there are no concessions on these.
All members of the caucus are encouraged to attend the main SWAT
meetings and we should keep the main body of SWAT informed. We
recognize that not all workers can make the noon meeting time. We
need to develop communication outside the meetings and not just by
email.
